The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

E474 Sucroglyceriden — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

An emulsifier: a mixture of mono-, di- and triesters of sucrose with fatty acids and residual mono-, di- and triglycerides, made by reacting sucrose with an edible fat or oil. Neither the EU nor JECFA names the kind of fat; the additive is not permitted in China and has no separate US section.

Basis of the ruling

Sucroglycerides are made by reacting sucrose with an edible fat or oil. The EU and JECFA standards do not name the type of fat; patents name tallow — the animal species not named, slaughter not according to the Shariah — and palm oil as preferred raw materials, and pig fat (lard)
