E459 Beta-cyclodextrin — is it halal?
Description
A cyclic oligosaccharide of seven glucose units: a carrier, stabiliser, thickener and flavour encapsulant. The raw material is starch (maize, potato, tapioca, wheat); the CGTase enzyme is microbial (bacteria, mould, recombinant hosts). Link to alcohol: some Chinese applicants add ethanol to the reaction (as complexant or against side reactions; usually distilled off); in three patents live yeast produces ethanol.
