E1202 Polyvinylpolypyrrolidone — is it halal?

Ruling: Halal

Description

An insoluble cross-linked polymer of N-vinylpyrrolidone: a stabiliser, carrier and colour-retention agent; mainly an adsorbent clarifier for beer, wine and other drinks, filtered off afterwards. The monomer is petrochemical, as for E1201. Polymerisation is in water with alkali or a cross-linker; ethanol is not used as the medium (it gives a soluble polymer), but one patent soaks the product in methanol.

Basis of the ruling

Polyvinylpolypyrrolidone is an insoluble cross-linked polymer of N-vinylpyrrolidone; the monomer is petrochemical (from acetylene and 2-pyrrolidone). Polymerisation takes place in water with alkali or a cross-linking agent; ethanol is not used as the medium.
