E1440 Hydroxypropyl starch — is it halal?
Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)
Description
A modified starch: starch is etherified with propylene oxide (up to 10 %) with sodium hydroxide and sulfate; then often lightly oxidised, bleached or acid-treated. Possible links: propylene oxide from «bio-circular» feedstock of unnamed kind (not established), ethanol in patented routes; enzymes of unnamed origin.
Basis of the ruling
Hydroxypropyl starch is made by etherifying starch with propylene oxide together with sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfate; it is then often lightly oxidised, bleached or acid-treated. In patented methods alcohol serves as the reaction medium and for precipitation and washing, and its source is not named.
