E1451 Acetylated oxidised starch — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

A modified starch (root or grain): oxidation with sodium hypochlorite and acetylation with acetic anhydride. A binding agent in soft confectionery — per JECFA, a substitute for gelatin or gum arabic. No alcohol or animal links in production were found, apart from the unnamed origin of acetic anhydride and the enzyme treatment allowed by JECFA.

Basis of the ruling

Acetylated oxidised starch is made from root or cereal starch: it is oxidised with sodium hypochlorite and then acetylated with acetic anhydride in a mildly alkaline medium. The origin of the acetic anhydride is not named.
