At what rate sadaqat al-fitr should be paid
Question
Is the fitra permissible at the “control” price (the regulated government price) or not? With us the state of the “control” is such that, except in a particular area, goods are not available everywhere at the “control” price. Now, is the view of permissibility or of impermissibility correct in general?
Answer
Pay the fitra at the rate at which grain is bought for one’s own family: [ar]وَيُشَمُّ رَائِحَةُ الِاسْتِدْلَالِ مِنْ قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى: «مِنْ أَوْسَطِ مَا تُطْعِمُونَ أَهْلِيكُمْ» (الآية)[/ar] “A hint of the evidence for this is sensed in the words of the Exalted: ‘…of the average of that with which you feed your families…’ (the verse)” (Surah al-Ma’ida, 5:89).
