The difference between sadaqa and alms

Question

What is the difference between sadaqa and alms, and what is called sadaqa? May food be given to a sayyid with the intention that its reward reach the souls of the deceased?

Answer

In sadaqa there is the intention of reward, and in alms too — in this the two are equal. However, sadaqa is sometimes wajib. For example, through making a vow (nadhr), or on behalf of a deceased person upon his bequest (wasiyya), or if unlawful wealth comes to someone and delivering it to the owner or his heirs is impossible — then giving it in charity is also wajib.
