Is a landlord entitled to zakat?

Question

Zayd is an owner of the nisab, but he is not in debt. If he wishes to study at a madrasa at his own expense, he will have to sell his land, and the wealth he has will not be enough to support him. Is it now permissible for Zayd to eat the madrasa’s food, or should he study by selling his land? Which course will be permissible for him?

Answer

If he lives on the produce of this land, has no other income, and after the expenses of the whole year no produce to the extent of the nisab remains, yet he still has another, separate nisab, then even so it is not right for him to take zakat food from the madrasa.
