When a Debtor Is Entitled to Zakat

Question

Zayd is an owner of the nisab, but he is in debt; he studies at some madrasa. Is it permissible for him to eat the madrasa’s food or not?

Answer

If he is in debt and, apart from the amount of the debt, he is an owner of the nisab, he should not take food of zakat and the like from the madrasa; if, apart from the amount of the debt, he is not an owner of the nisab, then he has permission.
