The agent delayed giving out the zakat
Question
Zayd gave ‘Umar one hundred rupees of zakat so that he would distribute them. However, a period of ten years has passed: ‘Umar did not distribute them but used them. Now ‘Umar wants to distribute them. Should he just set aside one hundred rupees of zakat, or will there also be some penalty or the like?
Answer
It is not sufficient for ‘Umar to give one hundred rupees on his own; rather, compensation (daman) is binding upon him, which he must return to Zayd.
