If Part of the Mosque Falls Within a Wall During Rebuilding
Question
An old mosque is to be demolished and rebuilt. If, upon demolition, the qibla is corrected, part of the mosque’s old southern wall comes onto the former floor, and most of the old wall becomes surplus. May this surplus wall now be used for some other need of the mosque, or not?
Answer
A place which has once been made a mosque for performing prayer may not now be declared outside the mosque and allotted to some other use. So it is in al-Durr al-Mukhtar. However, if the part that has come inside the wall is put to some use connected with the mosque itself, there is no harm in it; for example, a cupboard for the mosque may be made in it.
