May a sick person eat the meat of a vow himself or give it to acquaintances?

Question

If someone is ill and slaughters a he-goat or she-goat as sadaqa, what is the ruling on eating its meat himself or giving it to acquaintances (those who come to visit), or should he distribute it only to the poor?

Answer

If a vow (nadhr) was made, then it is not permissible either to eat it himself or to give it to a wealthy person; rather, it is necessary to give it to those entitled (mustahiqqin) and the poor. If no vow was made, then it is permissible both to eat it himself and to feed a wealthy person with it.
