Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab al-Najdi
Question
Question: do the scholars of truth agree with, and is it correct, the following statement of the late Shaykh al-Hadith of Dar al-‘Ulum Deoband, the honourable Mawlana Muhammad Anwar Shah Kashmiri: [ar]الإمام محمد بن عبد الوهاب النجدي، فإنه كان رجلا بليدا قليل العلم، فكان يسارع إلى الحكم بالكفر[/ar] “Imam Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab al-Najdi — he was a dull-witted man of little learning, and so he would hasten to pronounce a verdict of unbelief” (Introduction to “Fayd al-Bari”). Is the above opinion correct or not?
Answer
The opinion of Allama al-Shami is also close to this, as stated in “Radd al-Muhtar”, p. 427, vol. 3, “Bab al-Bughat” (the chapter on rebels); moreover, the two of them belong to one and the same era.
