Did the Prophet ﷺ Intend to Throw Himself from a Mountain?
Question
During a lecture at a public gathering, Zayd stated that when the descent of revelation ceased for a few days, the Prophet ﷺ, overcome with deep grief, used to climb the peaks of high mountains in order to throw himself down and take his own life; and in support of his statement Zayd cited that hadith of Sahih al-Bukhari found in Kitab al-Ta‘bir concerning the pause in revelation (fatrat al-wahy). Is it acceptable, from the standpoint of the Sacred Law, to attribute to the Prophet ﷺ so evil an act as suicide?
Answer
Zayd's statement is correct; this incident is indeed recorded in the authentic Sahih al-Bukhari. The noble Prophet ﷺ stood at the highest rank in character and attributes; the nearness [to Allah], grace and perfection granted to him were granted to no other human being or angel. Withal, he ﷺ was a human being (bashar)
