Maintenance of a divorced woman
Question
Question: I am a woman who observes hijab and am extremely unfortunate. Some time ago, according to the custom of the biradari (kinship community), my marriage took place with a man named Iqbal. After the marriage it came to light that the husband is utterly dissolute and a thug. Little by little he squandered all the jewellery and dowry goods on his debauchery; he gave neither bread to fill the stomach nor clothing for the body.
Answer
Since he pronounced talaq three times in front of witnesses, the nikah has ended completely. Your mahr and the ‘idda expenses are also wajib upon him. Once the ‘idda of three menstrual periods (hayd) has passed, you have the choice of a second nikah. The maintenance (nafaqa) of the daughter is also binding upon him.
