Calling one’s wife “mother”
Question
Question: Zayd, in a state of anger, called his wife “mother” or “sister.” What is the ruling?
Answer
By saying this, the woman has not become unlawful (haram) for him; rather, these words are void (laghw), but saying such a thing is makruh: [ar]وإن نوى بـ«أنت عليّ مثل أمي» أو «كأمي» — وكذا لو حذف «عليّ»، خانية — برًّا أو ظهارًا أو طلاقًا صحت نيته ووقع ما نواه؛ لأنه كناية، وإلا ينو شيئًا أو حذف الكاف بأن قال: أنت أمي، لغا، وتعين الأدنى، أي البر، يعني الكرامة.
