Addressing an oath of talaq to one’s wife

Question

There has been discord between Zayd and his wife for quite some time. Once Zayd said: “اگر تو کسی بھی رشتہ دار سے بات کریگی تو تجھے طلاق کی قسم” (“If you speak with any relative at all, then an oath of talaq on you”). He said these words three times in three sittings. His wife continually keeps up ties with her relatives. His wife, distressed, said, “If you will not keep me, then call two men and have my case settled.” At this Zayd said, “What need is there for two men?

Answer

No talaq has occurred from these words of the husband. However, it is necessary for the husband to treat his wife well, with kindness and affection; he should not adopt the way of beating and the like. It is also necessary for the wife to keep showing her husband respect, courtesy and obedience and to keep him content.
