Talaq under compulsion

Question

A fight took place between the landowner and the tenant farmers. The tenants filed a report with the officer in charge of the police station. The police station officer said: “I will register the report only when you ‘raise talaq’ (i.e., swear by talaq) that ‘we will not make a settlement’.” Both of them raised three talaqs, and the report was written down; the police filed the charge sheet of the case in court.

Answer

If “raising talaq” means that they said: “We have each given our wives three talaqs apiece,” then according to the Shari‘a these talaqs have taken effect and (the divorce) has become major (mughallaza); now it is not permissible to keep these women without halala.
