Doubt About the Number of Talaqs
Question
A dispute arose between Zayd and his wife Hinda. Zayd gave the said Hinda more than one talaq (probably in this way: “میں نے تجھ کو طلاق دیدی قطعی دیدی” — “I have given you talaq, given it definitively”, and the last phrase “قطعی دیدی” (“given it definitively”) once, or twice, or three times; those who heard it took it as two, or three, or four) and told her to get out of the house. Then, when his anger subsided, he kept the said wife in his house, and to this day she lives with him as before.
Answer
In none of the four statements is it mentioned what the words of talaq were; and what the questioner wrote, he too did not write with certainty. So if explicit (sarih) words of talaq were said, the ruling is this: if, in Hinda’s view, Zaynab’s statement is correct and Zaynab is trustworthy and upright (thiqa ‘adila)
