Why Passing Wind Nullifies Wudu

Question

The mas’ala is that if wudu is broken because of passing wind, one performs wudu without istinja’. What is the reason for this? The place from which the foul air came out is not washed, while apart from it wudu is performed.

Answer

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not explain the reason for this; he only commanded wudu. Who would dare to inquire into its reason? This is a matter of ta‘abbud (a command followed as an act of worship without grasping its underlying reason).
