How Much Water Is Needed for Wudu and Ghusl?

Question

How many seers (a unit of weight, ≈ 0.93 kg) of water should, according to the Shari‘a, be used in wudu and ghusl? And what is the ruling on using more than that?

Answer

For wudu, one and a half seers; for ghusl, four seers (Fatawa Rashidiyya). Using more than that without need is extravagance (israf).
