Granting Ijaza to Another’s Disciple
Question
Question: Is it permissible for an authorized khalifa (spiritual successor of a shaykh) to give a letter of succession to the successor-custodian of a Sufi lodge, or to his own brother in the tariqa (a fellow disciple of the same shaykh)? Or may he grant permission (ijaza) to accept the bay‘ah (pledge of allegiance) of a disciple of his brother in the tariqa?
Answer
If a khalifa is authorized by his shaykh on the basis of his fitness and capability, and the shaykh of his tariqa has granted him permission (ijaza) for this, then he too may grant permission — both on his own behalf and on behalf of his shaykh.
