Bay‘ah and Ijaza on the Shaykh’s Behalf
Question
Question: May someone write or state verbally that bay‘ah is being taken on the blessed hand of the spiritual guide, the shaykh of the tariqa? And may such a person grant permission (ijaza) to take bay‘ah on behalf of his shaykh?
Answer
Some shaykhs tell their khalifas and trusted associates: “Whoever you consider fit, grant him permission on my behalf” — in that case, permission to take bay‘ah may indeed be granted on their behalf.
