Trustee of the Shrine Without a Living Khalifa

Question

Question: May Zayd be elected trustee (mutawalli) and successor-custodian of the lodge of the shaykh of the tariqa, given that no khalifa (the shaykh’s spiritual successor) remains alive, although other disciples are alive?

Answer

What are the conditions for the trusteeship of the lodge of the shaykh of the tariqa whom Zayd follows? If those conditions are present in Zayd, then he too may become trustee (mutawalli).
