The Conditions for Being a Mujaddid
Question
What are the conditions for being a mujaddid? Also, does a mujaddid come to know that he is a mujaddid, or not? How many mujaddids have passed so far in India? It is stated in the noble hadith that in my community a mujaddid will be born every hundred years — so, on this reckoning, there ought to be quite a number of mujaddids?
Answer
A mujaddid comes to know that he is a mujaddid by way of inspiration (ilham), and also by way of inference through certain signs — although this knowledge is not equal to [knowledge through] revelation (wahy). A mujaddid acts upon the injunctions of the sunna with great force, is strongly averse to innovations, and pays no heed to opposition.
