Slaughtering a Useful Working Animal for Trade

Question

Is it permissible or not to slaughter, with the intention of trade, a useful animal — an ox, or a male buffalo, or a cow (a beast of burden) that works at the plough and pulls a cart — and to sell its meat?

Answer

To slaughter such a useful animal merely in order to earn money by selling its meat and hide is not appropriate; however, that money too will not be haram — it will be entirely permissible. Editorial note: In a hadith, on the occasion of a meal for guests, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade slaughtering a milch goat.
