Slaughtering and eating a free-roaming chicken (dajaja mukhallat) immediately
Question
Question: Chickens that roam about freely here and there — what is the ruling on catching one and immediately slaughtering and eating it? That is, is it makruh or not? If it is makruh, is it tanzihi or tahrimi? Some scholars have said that it is tahrimi and that to remove it the chicken should be kept tied up for three days. Is this correct? We hope you will write with proofs and in detail and give us occasion to be grateful.
Answer
A chicken that eats filth to such an extent that a foul smell has developed in it should be kept confined for as long as it takes for the smell to disappear; slaughtering and cooking it before that, i.e. catching it immediately, is makruh tahrimi.
