Doubt whether a day is the day of ‘Arafa or the day of sacrifice

Question

At the beginning of Dhu al-Hijja, news of the moon of the 29th came from various places, but there was no Shar‘i proof. In this case, what is the ruling on keeping a voluntary fast on 9 Dhu al-Hijja, regarding which there is doubt whether it is the day of ‘Arafa or the day of sacrifice (yawm al-nahr)?

Answer

Zayd’s opinion appears to be strong. The jurists have not regarded the difference of lunar horizons (ikhtilaf al-matali‘) as valid in the matter of the Ramadan crescent, whereas in the rulings related to Dhu al-Hijja — such as Hajj, fasting, ‘Arafa and sacrifice (udhiya) — it is valid.
