Fasting on Certain Specific Dates

Question

It is widely known among people that there are five fasts in the year the reward for observing which equals the fasts of a thousand years: (1) on 27 Rajab, (2) on 25 Dhu al-Qa‘da, (3) on 18 Dhu al-Hijja, (4) on 22 Muharram, (5) on 12 Rabi‘ al-Awwal. Kindly, whether these fasts are established or not, in either case publish it in the monthly “Nizam” (“Order”), because on this issue I came across a book by Abu Turab Kakori ﵀; he wrote it without any references, which causes concern.

Answer

Concerning the fasts of these five days — 27 Rajab, 25 Dhu al-Qa‘da, 18 Dhu al-Hijja, 22 Muharram, 12 Rabi‘ al-Awwal — no sound hadith is mentioned in the books of hadith, nor have the jurists described any merit of fasting on these days.
