Fasting Ashura on Its Own Is Makruh
Question
If, of the two fasts of Muharram which are sunna, a person observes only one instead of two, is that impermissible or permissible?
Answer
It is makruh tanzihi: [ar]وأما القسم السادس وهو المكروه فهو قسمان: مكروه تنزيهًا ومكروه تحريمًا، إلا والذي كره تنزيهًا كصوم يوم عاشوراء منفردًا عن التاسع أو عن الحادي عشر[/ar] “As for the sixth category, namely the makruh, it is of two kinds: makruh tanzihan and makruh tahriman… (?)
