Will One Be Forgiven Without Praying?

Question

Some people who pray also invite those who do not pray to perform the prayer. They reply: “We know about the prayers you perform; God willing, by the grace and generosity of God, we will be forgiven anyway.” To what extent is this correct?

Answer

The five daily prayers are fard ‘ayn; a severe threat (wa‘id) has come regarding abandoning them. The Prophet ﷺ never abandoned it, even though he was already forgiven. Concerning one who abandons the prayer it has been said that he will be resurrected with Pharaoh, Haman and others. Adopting carelessness towards it is extremely dangerous.
