Which Sura Should Be Recited in the Witr
Question
One Companion ﵁ used to recite Surah al-Lahab frequently in the prayer, whereupon the Prophet ﷺ said: “Do you not remember any other sura?” And we have heard that reciting Surah al-Lahab and Surah al-Ikhlas in the witr is mustahabb. [Is it] mustahabb, or sunna?
Answer
Reciting in the witr, in the first rak‘a, “سَبِّحِ ٱسْمَ رَبِّكَ ٱلْأَعْلَى” (Surah al-A‘la, 87:1), in the second “قُلْ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ” (Surah al-Kafirun, 109:1), and in the third “قُلْ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ” (Surah al-Ikhlas, 112:1) is found in authentic hadiths. And what is the name of the Companion ﵁ to whom the recitation of Surah al-Lahab is attributed?
