The imamate of a man whose hand has been cut off
Question
(1) What is the ruling on the imamate of a man whose hand has been cut off (maqtu' al-yad)? (2) If people prayed behind him for a long time, and afterwards some self-seeking people, for some reason, raising the charge that his hand is cut off, themselves refuse to pray behind him and also stop others — how far is this correct? [We request that] the signatures of most of the prominent scholars be affixed. (20 Jumada al-Akhira 1355 AH)
Answer
If that person performs purification and cleanliness properly and takes care over it, his imamate is valid according to the Shari'a; otherwise it is makruh. The imamate of a healthy and sound person is in any case preferable (awla).
