Praying Behind a Hypocrite and the Ruling on Breaking a Promise
Question
Is one who breaks a promise called a hypocrite (munafiq) or not? And what is the ruling on praying behind a munafiq?
Answer
A person who, when making a promise, intends: “I will not fulfil the promise,” makes the promise merely to deceive. Such a person is called a munafiq in the noble hadith, meaning that there is in him one of the signs of a munafiq; he should not do this. It does not mean that he has ceased to be a believer and will go to the lowest level of Hell.
