The Imamate of One Who Betrays a Trust
Question
A certain man at a ration shop sells on the black market above the government rate; for example, he sells sugar on the black market at four rupees seventy-five paise (small copper coins, fractions of a rupee). What is the ruling on betraying a trust (amana)? And what is the status of such a person’s imamate?
Answer
Betraying a trust (amana) is not permissible; it is a grave sin, indeed a sign of hypocrisy (nifaq). Appointing a person in this condition as imam is makruh.
