The prayer of a mute person
Question
How should a person who has been deaf and mute from birth — who has never heard a single word with his ears nor spoken one with his tongue — perform the prayer?
Answer
Since such a person is unable to recite, recitation (qira’a) is not fard for him. As for the remaining pillars he is able to perform — qiyam, sitting (qu‘ud) and the like — he should perform them just as everyone else does. If he has enough understanding to know that the prayer is fard, and then does not perform the prayer to the extent of his ability, he will be sinful.
