Giving the adhān inside the mosque using a loudspeaker
Question
In a local mosque, a loudspeaker for the adhān has been installed inside the mosque, in a cabinet to the right of the first row, with permanent electrical wiring fixed in the wall. It is kept inside for protection, as placing it outside raises the risk of theft. As a result, the adhān is given while standing inside the mosque in the place of the first row. Some object, claiming that giving the adhān inside the mosque is makrūh. According to the Ḥanafī school, what is the ruling in this situation?
Answer
The reason giving the adhān inside the mosque is considered makrūh is that the voice does not normally reach far, and thus the purpose of the adhān is not fully achieved. Therefore, it is recommended to give the adhān from an elevated or open place so that the sound reaches a greater distance. The adhān itself is not something contrary to the sanctity of the mosque.
