How the Husband Should Pay the Mahr If the Wife Will Not Accept It

Question

Question: It has been two years since a certain Hinda was divorced (talaq). She neither takes the mahr debt nor refuses it in clear words; rather she says: “I will take my due in the Hereafter.” Zayd wishes to be discharged of the mahr debt in his lifetime and repeatedly entreats Hinda to receive her debt somehow.

Answer

If Hinda neither forgives the mahr debt nor receives it, Zayd should place the mahr amount before Hinda in such a way that, should she wish to stretch out her hand and pick it up, she could pick it up; after that Hinda has the choice — she may pick it up or not.
