Marrying Off a Daughter on the Condition of Marrying the Son-in-Law’s Sister
Question
A man wishes to marry off his daughter in this manner: he himself wishes to marry the full sister of the man to whom he is marrying his daughter. The young man is named Abdullah, and the girl, the sister, Parwar (?); both have one mother and two fathers. Is this arrangement permissible or not? Nur al-Hasan, imam of the mosque, Bihari Garh, Saharanpur, 8 Dhu al-Qa‘da 52 AH.
Answer
If there is no other impediment in the Shari‘a, there is nothing objectionable in this nikah according to the Shari‘a; it is without doubt permissible, on account of the words of the Exalted: [ar]وَأُحِلَّ لَكُم مَّا وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكُمْ[/ar] “And lawful to you are those beyond these” (Surah al-Nisa’, 4:24).
