Offer and Acceptance with a Mahr of Five Thousand Concealed under the Hand
Question
The gist of the question is this: a wedding procession came to us in a very fine manner; after the meal and so on, the writing and reading were duly carried out, the sermon was recited and all the due obligations were performed, but the respected imam pressed the mahr of 5000/ five thousand under his hand in the marriage register, and afterwards said that five thousand had been fixed (literally: “fixed, being five thousand”).
Answer
What happened is certainly a grievous and regrettable situation. Nevertheless, if offer and acceptance did not take place here, and elsewhere the nikah was performed in accordance with the Shari‘a with the girl’s permission and consent, then it is valid.
