Reciting al-Fatiha at the Grave: Standing or Sitting?

Question

Should al-Fatiha be recited at a grave standing or sitting, or are both ways correct?

Answer

He should recite al-Fatiha standing: [ar]قَالَ فِي الْفَتْحِ: وَالسُّنَّةُ زِيَارَتُهَا قَائِمًا، وَالدُّعَاءُ عِنْدَهُ قَائِمًا[/ar] “In al-Fath it says: ‘The sunna is to visit it (the grave) standing and to make du‘a at it standing’” (“Shami”, vol. 1, p. 542). If, however, someone has to stay for a long time, or standing is tiring, then sitting is also correct.
