Reciting the Qur’an near a Sick Person or at a Grave
Question
A person recites the Qur’an near a sick person or near a grave and takes nothing for it — no money or anything else. Is this permissible or not? And if he does take money, on which occasions and in which situations is it permissible, and in which is it impermissible? Please write the answer plainly, so that everyone can understand it.
Answer
Reciting without money near a sick person or near a grave with the intention of [earning] reward is correct according to the Shari‘a. Reciting for payment, however, is haram: the one who takes the payment and the one who gives it are both sinners.
