Forgiveness of a Disobedient Son before the Father’s Death, and Isal al-Thawab

Question

Before the father’s death, while he is [still] conscious, the son asks forgiveness for his acts of disobedience and the father forgives him. Is forgiveness [given] at that time valid or not?

Answer

God willing, the forgiveness will take effect. [The son] should keep doing as much isal al-thawab and supplication for forgiveness for the father as he can, and keep making amends for the disobedience to whatever extent possible.
