The funeral prayer in the mosque
Question
Question. Hazrat Mufti A‘zam, may his blessings endure! Regarding the hadith relied upon by the Hanafis: [ar]من صلى على جنازة في المسجد فلا أجر له[/ar] “Whoever prays over a janaza in the mosque, there is no reward for him,” the esteemed hadith scholars object that it is not authentic, because its narrator Salih, the freedman (mawla) of al-Taw’ama, is alone (munfarid)
Answer
Performing the funeral prayer in the mosque without any valid excuse (‘udhr) is makruh according to the Hanafis. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: [ar]من صلى على جنازة في المسجد فلا شيء له[/ar] “Whoever prays over a janaza in the mosque, there is nothing for him” (“Abu Dawud”, p. 98, vol. 2; “Sunan Ibn Majah”, p. 110).
