How does a latecomer (masbuq) complete the rest of the funeral prayer?

Question

A person joined the funeral prayer after the second takbir. In what manner will he now complete the funeral prayer? Will he begin reciting from the thana’, and will he complete the remaining takbirs after the salam or not?

Answer

He should join the imam by saying the third takbir and recite the supplication; then, after the fourth takbir, when the imam completes the prayer, he should say one takbir and recite the thana’, and say the second takbir and recite the salawat. If there is a fear that the bier will soon be lifted, he should finish the prayer with just the two takbirs.
