Mocking the Prayer and the Like

Question

A Muslim man, wholly unacquainted with and devoid of the knowledge of the Sacred Law, who also smokes cannabis and hashish and takes opium, out of obstinacy and ignorance counts himself a pious elder; he is in the habit of ridiculing and mocking the Holy Qur’an and the noble hadith, going so far as to say, “People perform prayer — they bow their heads for nothing; there is no command in the Qur’an to perform prayer.

Answer

Prayer is an individual obligation established by a definitive text; one who denies it is a kafir. Ridiculing and mocking the prayer, the Holy Qur’an and the noble hadith is kufr. If one has the power, such a person should be suitably warned; otherwise relations with him should be cut off.
