Laughing at the Adhan

Question

Zayd is calling the adhan and laughing, and ‘Umar is listening and is in the same state. Is there a recompense for this in the Sacred Law or not? It is commonly said that divorce takes place through such an act — is this actually correct or not?

Answer

Laughing while calling or hearing the adhan is contrary to the etiquette and reverence of the adhan; while calling the adhan even returning a greeting and clearing one’s throat without need are not permissible.
