Is Demeaning One’s Teacher Kufr?
Question
If someone demeaned an imam, his parents or his teacher, should the scholar or the qadi rule for him a renewal of marriage, as in “Fusul ‘Imadiyya”, or not?
Answer
Demeaning one’s parents or teacher without a Shar‘i cause is a sin, but not kufr: by it neither does iman depart nor does the marriage break, so renewal of marriage is not obligatory either. But if a person believes to be lawful something forbidden in itself (haram li-‘aynihi), whose prohibition is definitive — that is kufr: by it iman is stripped away and the marriage breaks.
