Is One Obliged to Hold Belief in One’s Own Iman and Islam

Question

Has the Sacred Law made it binding upon a Muslim not to profess that he is a Muslim? And is it permissible to hold a belief that contradicts the creed of Islam?

Answer

It is not obligatory to go about, without need and without cause, telling everyone everywhere and proclaiming: “I am a Muslim.” Yet wherever the need arises, to declare and proclaim it is obligatory. As for the heart’s conviction in one’s own iman and Islam, it is obligatory in every state.
