Breaking a promise in a guarantee
Question
Wali Muhammad, at one time, being in need and difficulty, said to Muhammad Ismaʿil: “There is a wedding coming up at my home and I have no cash. You are acquainted and have dealings with the cloth merchant (bazzaz) from whom you buy cloth, so please get me cloth on credit for the wedding.” Muhammad Ismaʿil, sensing his predicament, had cloth worth two hundred rupees given to him on his own guarantee, as much as was needed.
Answer
This breaking of the promise and not paying another’s money despite having the means is oppression (zulm) and a sin. This is a right of a servant of Allah (haqq al-ʿabd), for which there will be a severe reckoning in the Hereafter, and misfortune will befall him in this world too. He ought to fear Allah.
